Toni Lydman returns to HSBC Arena! Anaheim finishes their 5 game road trip in Buffalo tonight. The game is ‘blacked out’ due to Versus owning the rights threfore I will be writing this post from radio. I will do my best to get additional YouTube videos to supplement the text.
We’ve got Ryan Miller in net for Buffalo and Curtis McElhenney gets the nod for Anaheim. The Sabres lead 3-0 after the first period. Drew Stafford struck on the power play 4:43 into the first period on a backhand for his 9th goal of the year. At 10:05 Nathan Gerbe Fiiiiiiiinally got his first goal of the season on a wrtister assisted by newly returned Captain Craig Rivet. Rivet is back in the lineup after losses to Florida and Tampa bay caused Lindy Ruff to shake things up. Rivet had been benched for 11 straight games and 16 of 18. Chris Butler is the odd man out. Nathan Gerbe is in due to the injury to Tim Connolly. Connolly will require surgery. Read about Connolly here at TSN.com. At 13:36 Veteran Jason Blake hits none other than Patrick Kaleta from behind and receives a boarding major and game misconduct. Three and a half minutes into the five minute man-advantage Tyler Ennis gets his 8th of the season assisted by Sekera and Jordan Leopold.
Two fights right off the bat! First Ryan Getzlaf and Cody McCormick drop the mits at Center ice. At the next face-off Paul Gaustad and Kyle Chipchura took their turn on the dance floor. Tyler Two!!! The Sabres get another goal at the 4:40 mark as Tyler Ennis nets his 2nd of the game and 9th of the year. 4-0 Sabres. We get our third fight of the night as Chris Butler accepts the invitation from George Parros. From the radio description it appears that Parros won the scrap.
Patrick Kaleta has not returned since being boarded by Jason Blake in period one. The Sabres lead in shots 30-9 with 5 minutes left in period two. Anaheim must be tired from playing last night whereas the Sabres have not played since Saturday. Anaheim beat the Bruins 3-0 last night in Boston. Period two ends with Buffalo in the lead 4-0.
Anaheim took two penalties in the first half of period three and Buffalo was unable to capitalize. With less than five minutes Corey Perry ended Ryan Miller’s chance at a shutout with his 18th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by 40 year old Teemu Selanne. It was Selanne’s 21st assist of the season. Oh Captain, My Captain! Craig Rivet gets a goal in his first game back on the ice. Assist to another old man, Rob Niedermayer. Corey Perry added his 2nd goal of the night in garbage time to make the final score 5-2 Buffalo.
