Ilya Kovalchuk scored his first goal of the season and it was an important one. 1-0 was the final score as the Devils escaped HSBC Arena with 2 points and their first W of the season. Kovalchuk ripped a slap shot stick side past Ryan Miller 53 seconds into the OT period. The loss was the Sabres 3rd in a row. The team did gain one point for making it to the OT period. New Jersey outshot Buffalo 35-24. The win was a first for new Devils head coach John MacLean. Ironically Sabres goalie Ryan Miller received the first star, while Brodeur and Kovalchuk took 2nd and 3rd star respectively.
Jason Pominville’s streak of 366 consecutive games played came to an end. To tell the truth I had no idea he’d gone four straight years without missing a single game. But that doesn’t degrade the accomplishment. Hopefully he can return soon and help a team that’s struggling to score goals.
Cody McCormick fought Mark Fraser 12:18 into the period. The fight was perhaps in response to Patrick Kaleta taking a charge at Fraser earlier in the period. Kaleta was penalized for leaving his feet to make a hit that knocked Fraser to the ground. The fight was a good one with both dance partners trading punches. Fraser broke his hand and will require surgery; more injury woes for the Devils.
Shaone Morrisonn injured his groin on his last shift in regulation. The defenseman will miss at least this weekend’s two games.
Although disappointed the Sabres coach and players are not ready to press the panic button. Tyler Myers said, "We're four games in, and there isn't anything to freak out about… We had a lot of chances; we just didn't put them in."
Buffalo plays Montreal Friday night at HSBC Arena. The game marks the 40th Anniversary of the Sabres first ever game. There will be special pre-game ceremonies. The Sabres will wear their home whites and Montreal their road red sweaters. Buffalo is 1-2-1 with 3 points.
Insignificant stat of the day: Buffalo sits in 9th place in the Eastern Conference after four games played. 78 games to go.
Friday Game Time: 7:30pm at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY
