NHL Update

Western Conference:

I am currently watching game 3 of this series as I write…The Sharks are up on Detroit 2-0 in their best of 7 series.  Joe Pavelski has been the star for the Sharks so far, tallying 9 goals in the playoffs.  Pavelski is second only to Sid the Kid in playoff points; Joe P has 14, to Crosby’s 16. Holmstrom just scored to make it 1-0 Detroit in period 1.  The play has been typical physical playoff style with both sides handing out free facewashes & hard hits. Jamie McGinn has been an active physical 4th liner for The Sharks.  Ryan Clowe has also seen his fair share of physical play.  Todd Bertuzzi just got robbed on a wrap around, but what do we have here?... PENALTY SHOT! Henrik Zetterberg misses the Penalty Shot on a backhand.  Great glove save by Evgeni Nabokov to keep the score 1-0 Detroit.(near end 1st  Period) Dan Cleary makes it 2-0 Detroit with 1:23 left, with a rifle wrister from the low slot. Devin Setoguchi cuts the lead in half with 3.2 seconds left in Period 1; assist to Joe Pavelski. Wow!, what a great period of hockey!

Blackhawks – Vancouver(series tied 1-1) Chicago evened their series last night in dramatic fashion.  Kris Versteeg received a pass from Duncan Keith and buried it top-shelf with 1:30 left in the game.(Video)  The goal completed a comeback that saw The Canucks pull out to a 2-0 lead within 5 minutes of puck drop.  South Buffalo Native, Patrick Kane, has 6 goals for the Blackhawks.

Sabres note: The Sabres brass would be well served to watch the final 3 rounds of the playoffs to see what success looks like.  Different aspects of the game include; size of players, style of play, and power play success.  The Boston series exposed flaws in the team, but I would say that Boston is far to one end of the spectrum as far as competition goes.  To change your team, only considering the Boston series would be foolish.  I would specifically watch the Sharks-Detroit series, 2 teams that have done a lot of winning.  Pittsburgh in the East have had success as well, but their formula isn’t too difficult to figure out.  They have Crosby and Malkin; End of Story.
