Opening Night: NHL Regular Season is Underway
Former Sabre Clarke MacArthur scored the game winning goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. The Leafs defeated The Montreal Canadiens 3-2 at The Air Canada Center. MacArthur beat Jaroslav Spacek and whipped a backhand past Carey Price 1:36 into the 3rd period. Phil Kessel and Tim Brent also scored for the Leafs. Dustin Boyd and Jeff Halpern scored for Montreal. J.S. Giguere made a key stop on Brian Gionta in the waning moments of the game to preserve the win for the rebuilding Leafs.
The Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at The Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. Former Sabre Danny Briere opened the scoring 2:51 into the 2nd period. Claude Giroux and Blair Betts added goals for Philly. Tyler Kennedy scored the Penguins first goal at their new home 44 seconds into the 3rd. Alex Goligoski scored Pittsburgh's 2nd goal 5:14 into the 3rd period. Both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were shut out. Chris Pronger sat out with a right knee problem. Rookie Sergei Bobrovsky got his first NHL win stopping 29 of 31 pucks for the Flyers.
Calgary at Edmonton. We had our first fight of the young NHL season. Stefan Meyer of Calgary took on Ryan Jones in a welterweight battle. Heavyweights Raitis Ivanans of Calgary and Steve Mcintyre of Edmonton were close to dropping the mits but were upstaged by the Meyer-Jones bout. Rookie Taylor Hall got a slashing penalty in the first period. Edmonton leads 1-0 in the 3rd period on a goal by Gilbert Brule. Tim Jackman & Theo Peckham just dropped the mits for another decent fight. The battle of Alberta is living up to its name. A 3rd fight just broke out between Brett Sutter of Calgary and Colin Fraser of the Oilers. Edmonton ended up winning this game 4-0. Edmonton rookie Jordan Eberle had 2 goals for The Oil. Ales Hemsky had the 4th goal for Edmonton. Heavyweights Raitis Ivanans of Calgary and Steve Mcintyre of Edmonton finally obliged the crowd and dropped the mits with 3 minutes left. McIntyre gave him two hard rights and TKO'd the big Latvian. Ivanans needed assistance to leave the ice.
Chicago trails Colorado 3-2 in the 3rd. Marian Hossa assisted on a Bryan Bickell power play goal for Chicago 4:37 into the game. Former Rochester Amerk, Chris Stewart scored unassisted to tie the game at 16:30 of the 1st. Matt Duchesne gave the Aves the lead 6:31 into the 2nd. Colorado won this game 4-3 in overtime. Paul Stastny scored Colorado's 3rd goal and also their 4th which was the OT winner. Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago. Goalies were former Amerk Craig Anderson for Colorado and Marty Turco for Chicago.
The Carolina Hurricanes defeated The Minnesota Wild 4-3 earlier today in Helsinki Finland. Brandon Sutter had 2 goals for the Canes. Cam Ward got the win in net.
