Sabre Notes: Getting ready for the Season
Today is the final Pre-season game for the Sabres. The team plays host to Philadelphia at 6pm at HSBC Arena. The Regular season begins this Friday in Ottawa as The Sabres take on The Sens at 7:30pm at The Corel Center. Today The Sabres sent another 9 players packing back to various lower tiers of the hockey world. Among the players sent away was forward Zack Kassian, who will play another season for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. The AHL’s Portland Pirates gained another seven players. Luke Adam, Paul Byron, Mark Mancari, Drew Schiestel, TJ Brennan, Dennis Persson and goalie David Leggio were all added to Portland’s roster. Mark Parrish was released from his tryout contract. This leaves The Sabres with 26 players. The final roster limit is 23.
It can be assumed that Jhonas Enroth will eventually be sent to Portland as the Sabres will not carry 3 goalies. The groin injury to Patrick Lalime will keep Enroth on the roster temporarily, but won’t take up a spot as Lalime will be on IR. That leaves two more cuts to be made. Both of those cuts could come from the 9 defenseman that remain on the roster. Most likely only 2 of the 3 of Butler, Sekera, and Mike Weber will be on the team. Marc-Andre Gragnani likely lost his chance due to injury that will keep him out for the start of the season.
The Sabres have 14 forwards now and could keep all 14 and still be at the 23 man limit. Nathan Gerbe and Cody McCormick are probably the only two players in any danger of being sent to Portland.
The Sabres currently lead Philadelphia 9-3 in the 3rd period. Sabres goals: McCormick, Roy, Gerbe, Myers, Roy(2), Pominville, Ennis, Stafford, Hecht.
